5 TIPS FOR START-UPS LOOKING TO SCALE THEIR BUSINESS

Scaling a business is not an easy task. Along with the excitement of expansion comes a whole host of new challenges – including legal ones. As you take your business to the next level, be sure to keep these five legal tips in mind.

  1. Review Your Contracts

As your business grows, the needs of your business will change and your contracts will inevitably need to change with it. Whether you’re expanding into new markets or bringing on new team members, it’s important to review your existing contracts to ensure they still reflect the needs of your business. This process may seem daunting, but a solicitor can help you identify any areas that need to be updated.

  1. Protect Your Intellectual Property

As you scale your business, you’ll likely create new intellectual property – including trademarks, and copyrights. Be sure to protect your intellectual property by registering it with the Intellectual Property Office and including confidentiality clauses in any agreements with third parties.

  1. Comply With Regulatory Requirements

Depending on the industry in which your business operates, there may be certain regulatory requirements you need to comply with. For example, in a children’s nursery sale, there are OFSTED requirements which need to be complied with. As you expand into new markets and introduce new products or services, be sure to research any applicable regulations and obtain the necessary licenses and permits. Failing to do so could result in costly penalties for your business.

  1. Manage Debt Carefully

If you’re scaling your business through debt financing, be sure to manage that debt carefully. Review all loan terms and security documents diligently and work with a specialist solicitor and accountants to ensure that you’re making sound decisions for the long-term viability of your business.

  1. Automate your processes

As your business grows, there will be more and more tasks that need to be completed on a daily basis. To keep things running smoothly, it’s important to automate as many of these tasks as possible. This could include using accounting software to automate financial tasks, using customer relationship management (CRM) software and automating sales and marketing tasks. By automating certain tasks, you’ll free up time for yourself and your team so that you can focus on more important things.

Scaling a business is an exciting time, but it’s also a time when legal challenges can arise if you’re not prepared for them. By keeping these five tips in mind, you can help ensure that your business is protected as it grows. And if you have any questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance.
